In an update to a controversial report, environmental activist group Greenpeace partly applauded Apple for taking more steps to add clean power to its data center, yet also said Apple should both be more transparent about its plans and should also be doing more.

Back in April Greenpeace slammed Apple, giving it failing marks in its ranking system, for not considering clean power enough when deciding where to locate its data centers (for more on clean power and data centers, read this detailed feature on the controversial world of clean power and data centers). In that report Greenpeace gave Google, Yahoo and Facebook higher marks than Apple.

Apple Inc. AAPL +1.01% said it was re-registering its products with a voluntary registry of green electronics, reversing course after a flood of criticism.

Apple, in an open letter from Bob Mansfield, the company’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, said the company would relist its products on the U.S. government-backed registry, called Epeat, potentially putting an end to the controversy that led at least one city government to tell its employees no longer to purchase the Cupertino, Calif., company’s products as a result.

Regulators in the U.S. and European Union are investigating Google Inc. GOOG +0.24%for bypassing the privacy settings of millions of users of Apple Inc.’s AAPL -0.17% Safari Web browser, according to people familiar with the investigations. Google stopped the practice last month after being contacted by The Wall Street Journal.
